Shushruta the pioneer of surgery also tells about the benefits Sesame can provide in many ways. He uses some terms which bring out the attributes of Sesame. The attributes are:
  • Dantya (Great for teeth) – Sesame can be used as oil, seed or paste for keeping the teeth strong. The paste is a great remedy for tooth ache (Gandusha treatment), chewing seeds keeps gums healthy and the oil can be used for oil pulling. Sesame in all its forms protects the teeth from Vata imbalance.
  • Pathya (Part of food) – Sesame oil is the most widely used oil for cooking in household across India. The oil is said to improve digestion, intelligence and also good for cleaning wounds. Wounds when cleaned with the oil heal faster. It can also be used for curing mouth ulcers.
  • Twacha, Balya and Keshya (Skin and Hair) – The oil improves skin quality and also is great for hair roots. The oil can be used to massage babies, as it helps to strengthen bones, joints and muscles. A person using Sesame oil regularly for head massage will not suffer from headaches, baldness, graying or hair fall. Massage on the body followed by a hot water bath calms down Vata.
