Whenever you ask anyone, they will tell you that fat intake is not good for health. Fat causes weight gain which in turn causes heart disease. But what happens when we stop fat intake altogether? The answer is in Ayurveda the science of treatment and health by natural means. A medical practitioner of Ayurveda in Rishikesh India gave some useful insights on this topic.

There are two kinds of fat as per Ayurveda – bad fat and good fat and it changes as per the climate. So, coconut oil may not be healthy for people living in mountains while it is the best for people living in coastal areas as per Ayurveda. Similarly, olive oil is not healthy for everybody as professed by modern medical science. It is not good for the tropical climate.

Ayurveda recommends using the oil from plants that naturally grow in the region. Thus mustard oil which grows in Northern India is the best source of dietary fat. In Ayurveda fats especially Ghrita (Ghee or clarified butter) is used as a base for making herbal concoctions. Fat helps to balance the doshas and is ideal food which contains high amounts of calories.

Let us take a closer look at why fat should be included in the diet.
  • Fats help to absorb fat-soluble vitamins like A, D. E and K. Without fat these essential vitamins cannot be synthesized.
  • Fat is the lubricant in the body. Fat taken as food provides essential elements which keep the body supple and the joints flexible.
  • The butyric acid which is found in Ghrita has anti-cancer properties and reduces a risk of cancer.
  • Fats help in digestion of food as contrary to the myth that they become and obstruction in the digestion process. In fact, they are essential for digestion of certain proteins.
  • Fat nourishes the nerves and keeps them healthy, and this is the reason for improved cognition and intelligence in people having a healthy share of fat in their diet.
