Papaya Extracts can Cure Dengue or not?

Most of the major cities in India are being hit by the disease dengue in the change of season.  Even small cities were not spared this season and reported deaths due to this pathogen. One of the most debatable topics this season has been the use of Papaya leaves and fruits and even papaya extract tablets in curing dengue. The rumor mill said that it was the miracle cure.

 

 

This resulted in all papaya trees stripped of their fruits and leaves overnight in Delhi and NCR. You could not see even one fruit of papaya on trees and the market price sky-rocketed. One kilogram of the fruit sold at Rs200 when dengue was at its peak. I was quite curious as papaya fruit is a part of my daily diet. I have a friend who was going for naturopath treatments in Rishikesh for his diabetes. I asked him to ask the Ayurvedic doctor about whether Papaya was a cure for dengue or not. I also researched online about dengue and found some interesting facts about it.

Most of the government messages professed that dengue mosquitoes breed in the clean and clear water of coolers and Air Conditioners. You will see this message everywhere. But a research in Africa says otherwise. The mosquitoes which are carriers of Dengue are very adaptive and can breed in garbage dumps with only traces of water and also in drains and dirty water. So, if you thought that your cooler was responsible for dengue forget it. Coolers and Air Conditioners contribute only 2.4% of Mosquito breeding.

 

Now coming back to papaya and dengue, my friend came back healthy from Rishikesh and was beaming with health. He was full praise for Ayurveda in Rishikesh, and particularly the Ayurveda retreats. Then I reminded him about the question about dengue and papaya. As per Ayurvedic texts and the Ayurvedic doctor, papaya is a good way to boost immunity. In fact, papaya extract is used for fever in Ayurveda same as the wonder herb “Giloy”. The doctor quoted from various Ayurvedic ancient texts and recent practices which do not list papaya extract, leaves or fruit as a cure for dengue. The doctor told that papaya extracts can have a good effect on patients of dengue due to its immune boosting property. So, next time you are buying those papaya extract pills be aware that they are not the cure for dengue. Instead, make papaya a part of your daily diet to boost your immunity.
